It’s red meat week here at school. We’re learning all about roasting and braising, how to cook meat to the proper temperature without using a thermometer, and why certain meats should be cooked long and slow while others are quick and fast. It’s quite the education.

Today I convinced several people in my class to go on a quick field trip. After all, we only have one class at 8:30 – a rare but exciting treat. About ten minutes from school is a chocolate and pastry shop called Pierre Herme.

Saturday is my play time – exploring different neighborhoods, shopping, trying new bistros, etc. Before I left for Paris, my neighbor, Jane, gave me a card that said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a new pair of shoes.” I wholehearted agree, so I thought I would do a little shoe shopping.

I've been humbled by a simple mixture of flour, butter and water. In two words - pastry dough. Today was a dough-filled day, and it made me realize how much I don't know. But I guess that's why I came to school, right?
