When we went to the cat shelter to select our kitties, we really wanted them to choose us rather than the other way around. I immediately bonded with a two-month-old black female who spent most of the time in my arms and licking my earlobe. It was love at first lick.
Now at six months old, Pixie is an adventurous eater – and I’m not just talking about cat food. With new recipes due for my corporate client every other week, Geoffroy and I are often creating and inventing new recipes in the kitchen. And pixie is right there with us.
Next to the counter where we perform a majority of the work is a set of high stools. As soon as we begin sharpening our knives, she hops up on the stool for a front row seat. Her eyes avidly follow each measurement and cut we make. Sometimes she’ll look at me with questioning eyes as if to say, “Are you sure that’s the right flavor combination?” or “That might need a bit more salt.”
But where Pixie really excels is in the tasting. She does love her cat food, but she likes to try new and exciting ingredients. Among her likes are green bell peppers, bread of any kind, romanesco, cooked fish or meat (nothing raw, thank you very much), sautéed potatoes, and blue cheese. But by far her favorite ingredient is arugula – with balsamic vinaigrette of course. Although the small leaves are hard for her to chew, she eagerly eats each leaf with a look of satisfaction in her eyes.
We couldn’t be more proud. Our other kitty, Little Dude, is all about his Iam’s cat food and thinks people food is beneath him. At least we have one child who eats her greens and cleans her plate!

New kitty prefers brie, and hangs around for any food preparation events. She prefers to lie on the rug at the kitchen sink, where she will lay for hours in the hopes of causing me to trip over her and spill sashimi, beef stock or Steak Diane.
She's such an elitist.
