When I see brides-to-be, I get so jealous! They are all smiles as they sit with their future husband picking out china patterns and 200 thread count sheets. Recently a newly-engaged couple took one of my classes at Sur La Table, and filled me in how happy they are and how much fun they’re having just planning the wedding.
Yes, Geoffroy and I will get to do all those things together someday. But when you’ve finally found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, you want that life to start as soon as possible.
But thankfully the being-together Gods have smiled on us. Last Friday, Geoffroy found out he has a new job at Le Cordon Bleu Paris. He will be assisting the downstairs kitchen chef, preparing all the mis en place and making lunch for the incredible chefs who teach there. It’s a far cry from working in a restaurant kitchen, so he’s excited that there won’t be as much pressure, no yelling, and he’ll get to teach students who assist each class. Finally a chance for him to share his gifts.
As luck would have it, his new job doesn’t start until the middle of April. So as soon as he found out he had the job, we immediately booked his ticket to Portland.
He flew the 7,000 miles in a mere 14 hours (Get it? Love is in the air?!?), and stepped off the plane and into my waiting arms. We will get a full month of waking up next to each other before he returns to Paris. And just two short weeks after that, I’m Paris-bound for the second time this year.
While he’s here, we’ll be visiting Cannon Beach, helping my mom with Bite of the Gorge, having dinner with friends, and discussing an upcoming kitchen remodel. We’re also picking out paint colors for the living room, rearranging the bedroom furniture, and cleaning out one of my over-packed closets for his things. He woke up from his jet lag this morning to rearrange and clean out my refrigerator. Love is grand, isn't it?
I’m also dragging him along to all my Sur La Table classes, the video shoot for Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield, and even a wine-maker’s dinner. So even though we don’t get to pick out our silverware and register for salt and pepper shakers, we still get to be together. And for that I’m truly thankful.
So although Skype and text messaging are great for a long distance relationship, nothing is as wonderful as seeing you love’s face first thing in the morning.
